AMES, Iowa - Iowa State got what it needed when it needed it most to post a 61-53 Big 12 Conference win over Kansas State Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. The No. 22 Cyclones made seven free throws in the last minute-and-a-half of the game to improve to 5-5 in the Big 12 Conference and 17-7 overall. Iowa State sits tied for fifth with Texas in the league standings. Kansas State falls to 6-4 in the Big 12 and 16-7 overall.
Bolte led Iowa State with 25 points but point guard Laura Mansfield stepped up at the key moments late to get the Cyclones a crucial conference victory. The junior hit a jumper with 2:33 left to give Iowa State a 52-47 lead. A Bolte basket with 1:50 left gave Iowa State a 54-49 advantage. Then Chassidy Cole took a key charging call on Kansas State's Brittany Chambers with 1:35 left on the clock. The Cyclones got the ball back and Mansfield ended up going to the line to make four more free throws to push the Cyclone lead to 58-51 with 49 seconds remaining.
Kansas State's 6-2 post Jalana Childs almost single-handedly brought her team back into the game after Iowa State led 38-27 at halftime. Childs scored 19 of Kansas State's 26 second-half points after tallying just two points in the first half. Her bucket had closed the Wildcat deficit to 52-49 with 2:14 to go.
Anna Prins came off the bench to score 10 points for the Cyclones, who play at Texas Tech Wednesday at 7 p.m. CST in Lubbock, Texas. Kansas State's Brittany Chambers had 19 points, including 15 in the first half as it was Iowa State that scored inside and KSU outside in the initial stanza. Iowa State was 21-of-26 from the free-throw line for the game, including a career-high 12-for-12 by Bolte. Kansas State was 3-of-4 from the line in the game.
The contest was tied 22-22 when Iowa State went on a 16-5 run in the final five minutes of the first half. The key juncture early in the Cyclone surge was when Kansas State guard Taelor Karr was called for fouling Iowa State's Hallie Christofferson and then assessed a technical foul. Bolte made the technical-foul free throws and then Christofferson made her two shots at line for a 37-27 lead with 57 seconds left in the half and one more before the buzzer. The freshman had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Iowa State before a crowd of 11,239.
