LUBBOCK, Texas ? Another second-half road rally by Iowa State was vanquished in the final minutes of a 61-50 Big 12 Conference loss to Texas Tech in the United Spirit Arena Wednesday.? Anna Prins led Iowa State with 12 points and Chelsea Poppens had 11 but Texas Tech answered the Cyclone rally with a run its own to improve to 18-7 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12. Iowa State, which struggled from the outside throughout, is now 17-8 overall and 5-6 in the conference. The Cyclones play host to Colorado Saturday at 7 p.m. CST in Hilton Coliseum.
When Texas Tech's Casey Morris hit a three to start the second half the Lady Raiders were up by 19 points, 42-23 at the 18:44 mark.? Then Iowa State started chipping away. When Poppens scored with 8:21 remaining, the Cyclone run of 19-5 had cut the lead to 47-42. But Texas Tech stopped the damage by scoring on consecutive possessions to move back up to 51-42 on a basket by Christine Hyde with 7:20 left. Iowa State never got the deficit into single figures for the balance of the game.
Texas Tech was hitting from the outside early. A trio of successful treys by three different Lady Raiders lifted Tech to an early 11-5 lead. Leading the attack was 6-3 forward Kierra Mallad. She made five straight baskets to force open a 19-5 Texas Tech advantage.
Mallard came into the game averaging 12.9 points per game and had 13 in the contests' first eight minutes. It was 22-5 before Anna Prins ended a seven-minute Cyclone scoring drought with basket to make it 22-7 with 10:38 to go. When Mallard put the Lady Raiders ahead 32-14 with 5:07 remaining, she had 19 points while Iowa State had only accumulated 14. Texas Tech's Kelsi Baker sank a three with two seconds left and the Lady Raiders led 39-23 at halftime. Texas Tech's first-half assist to turnovers was 14-to-2. Iowa State's was 3-to-7.
Mallard did not score in the second half but her 19 points in the first half were enough to lead her team for the game.? Texas Tech made 8-of-16 shots from three-point territory.? Iowa State was 5-for-15.
