AMES, Iowa - Iowa State senior point guard Diante Garrett parlayed his sensational 2010-11 season into a chance to showcase his skills in front of NBA scouts by receiving an invitation to the 59th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, April 6-9 in Portsmouth, Va.
Garrett, an All-Big 12 Second-Team selection in 2011 after averaging 17.3 points and leading the Big 12 in assists (6.1), is one of 64 players invited to the prestigious tournament.
The tournament is a gathering for the best seniors in college basketball.
"I am very excited to get the invitation to Portsmouth," Garrett said. "I have heard what a great tournament it is from other guys. Marquis (Gilstrap) played in it last year had a great time there. It is a great chance to play in front of the pro scouts, and I just want to go there and play my game and showcase my talents."
Garrett, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., joins a strong group of former Cyclones to compete in the tournament. Martin Rancik, Paul Shirley, Jackson Vroman, Jared Homan, Jiri Hubalek and Gilstrap all played in the postseason classic within the last decade.
The 6-4 point guard increased his scoring by 8.1 points (9.2-17.3 ppg) from his junior to senior season and ranked in the top-100 nationally in three categories: scoring, assists and steals. Garrett ended his Cyclone career ranking second all-time in career assists (611) and is just one of three players in Big 12 history to record 1,300 points and 600 assists in a career.
Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg confirmed that seniors Jamie Vanderbeken and Darion "Jake" Anderson are on the alternate list for an invitation to Portsmouth.
