KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Iowa State rallied late from a double-digit deficit in the last eight minutes of the game and had two three-point shots in the final seconds to tie the contest but couldn't convert and fell 56-53 to Kansas State in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament at Municipal Auditorium Wednesday.
Iowa State is now 22-10 and will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field Monday. Kansas State is 21-9 and will play Baylor Friday in the league semifinal bracket.
The Kansas State lead was 49-36 with 7:27 remaining in the midst of a six-minute Cyclone scoring drought. Then Hallie Christofferson made a pair of threes and made a shot down low. When Lauren Mansfield hit from three-point range the lead had narrowed to 52-47 with 3:54 left. But the Cyclones turned the ball over on three straight possessions. Two baskets by Kelsey Bolte closed the gap to 54-51 with 51 seconds left. Christofferson made a basket that closed the gap to 56-53. Iowa State forced a turnover and had three-point attempts by Chassidy Cole and Bolte that didn't fall leading to the final score.
Kansas State outscored Iowa State, 8-4 in the first four and a half minutes of the second half to take a 38-29 lead with 15:32 left in the game. The Cyclones closed the gap to 40-36. But Brittany Chambers and Jalana Childs responded in the paint and a Mariah White drive to the hoop put the Wildcats ahead 45-36 with 10:29 to go in the game.
The Cyclones trailed 30-25 at the half, largely because of eight turnovers. Childs had 10 first-half points and went on to score 14 in the game.
The Cyclones were led by Christofferson's 18 points. Bolte chipped in 10 points and Chelsea Poppens had a game-high eight rebounds.
