AMES, Iowa - Head volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and the Cyclones head to Lincoln, Neb. this weekend for the final competition of the spring season. The Cyclones will face the reigning Big 12 Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers for the final time as conference foes on Saturday night.
The Cyclones, 3-3-1 this spring, return to Lincoln without 2010 senior-standouts Ashley Mass or Victoria Henson but with the addition of Rachel Hockaday who is back with the team after undergoing season-ending knee surgery at the beginning of the 2010 season.
On Oct. 30, Iowa State fell in straight sets to the Huskers, 19-25, 16-25, 16-25. Henson led Iowa State with 11 kills in the match, the only Cyclone to record more than six kills. Carly Jenson posted 11 digs followed by Henson and Mass who each had 10.
This time around, the Cyclones will have to rely on spring standouts including right side hitter Tenisha Matlock and freshman outside hitter Hannah Willms who have dominated on offense for Iowa State since play started last month. Matlock leads the team with 78 kills in seven matches with Willms collecting 55 kills.
Kelsey Petersen, who had nine solo blocks against Nebraska-Kearney last weekend, leads the team with 16 total blocks and Matlock, showing strength on both sides of the ball, is second on the team with 11 total blocks, 10 of them solo blocks.
Spreading the ball around defensively, five Cyclones have over 20 digs this spring, led by Kristen Hahn with 41.
Saturday's match begins at 7 p.m. CDT at the NU Coliseum on the University of Nebraska campus.
