AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg didn't have to search very far for a replacement on his coaching staff. He looked right down the hall to Matt Abdelmassih, a valuable member of the Cyclone staff who has worked the last three years with Hoiberg - two with the T-Wolves and one at Iowa State.
Hoiberg convinced Abdelmassih to join him in Ames when he became head coach at Iowa State in April of 2010. Abdelmassih worked closely with Hoiberg in the T-Wolves front office before taking over as an assistant director of operations at Iowa State in 2010-11.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Abdelmassih has strong recruiting ties in the New York area. While briefly serving in a recruiting position last year for the Cyclones, the St. John's graduate was instrumental in landing Royce White, a top-20 player in the class of 2009, and Tavon Sledge, one of the best players out of New York City in the class of 2011.
