WACO, Texas - Iowa State's stint at the Big 12 Championships came to a close Thursday, with 4-0 loss to Texas Tech in the first round.
"It was a good experience," Iowa State coach Armando Espinosa said. "Texas Tech is a very good team, very solid. I wish them the best of luck."
The doubles point went to the Red Raiders when Samantha Adams and Kelsy Garland took the No. 1 spot, 8-6, against Tessa Lang and Maria Macedo. Elizabeth Ullathorne and Haley Fournier defeated Jenna Langhorst and Liza Wischer at No. 3, 8-2. After the two wins, Texas Tech had clinched the doubles point, and Erin Karonis and Simona Cacciuttolo surrendered the No. 2 spot with a 7-4 unfinished score.
"I think we played okay," Espinosa said. "We fought back, but it wasn't enough. They didn't give us an inch."
The Red Raiders clinched the match after three singles victories at the 2, 3, and 5 spots, finishing the dual 4-0.
Texas Tech will move on to quarterfinals and face the third-seeded Oklahoma Sooners at 9 a.m. Friday.
The loss marks the end of the season for the 2011 Cyclones.
"It's been kind of an up and down season," Espinosa said. "The girls learned a lot throughout it, and when we get back we're going to look straight ahead to next year. We want to take the positives from this season and leave the negatives behind."
