AMES, Iowa - It was a record setting day at the Southwest Athletic Complex as Erica Miller and Tori Torrescano both hit two home runs to give Iowa State an 11-3 victory in five innings via the run rule over the Northern Iowa Panthers. The win improves Iowa State to 17-13 on the year while dropping UNI to 20-15.
The four combined home runs by the Cyclone duo marked the first time in school history that Iowa State had four home runs as a team after 16 previous instances of three-home run games. The two home runs each increased both of their totals to seven apiece on the season.
Iowa State got down to business in the first inning. Sara Davison posted a one-out double, moving to third as Dalyn Varela reached on an error. Miller brought everyone home with a three-run home run over the highest point of the Southwest Athletic Complex scoreboard to give the Cyclones a 3-0 advantage.
Iowa State's offense continued to produce in the second as Heidi Kidwell got on base with a single and was followed by a single from Davison. Varela brought home Kidwell on an RBI-single to right to make the score 4-0. Davison came home on a passed ball during Miller's at bat to make it 5-0. Amandine Habben added an RBI to make it 6-0 at the end of two frames.
The Panthers pulled one back in the top of the third when Mackenzie Daigh sent a Rachel Zabriskie pitch over the right field wall to reduce the deficit to 6-1. Rachel Gerking repeated the act later in the inning sending a pitch off the scoreboard in right-center field to make it 6-2. It was Daigh's fourth home run of the year and Gerking's second.
The Iowa State offense got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Torrescano sent a Jessica Severinsen pitch over the right field wall to make Iowa State's advantage 7-2.
UNI put up another run in the top of the fifth before Iowa State got back to plating runs. Kidwell came home on a pitcher's error that sent Varela to first. Miller came up next and sent her second homer of the day off the top of the scoreboard. Torrescano was the next better up and sent the fans home with a home run to left field.
Zabriskie picked up the win to improve to 11-8 on the season. Zabriskie pitched all five innings, allowing six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out six. Jaye Hutcheson took the loss for UNI, moving to 3-9 on the season. Hutcheson went one-and-one-third innings, allowing six hits and six runs with three earned.
The win over UNI comes just a week after the Cyclones fell, 4-2, to the Panthers in Cedar Rapids.
Iowa State returns to the diamond Thursday for a doubleheader against Minnesota. The first game begins at 2 p.m. CDT.
