Paul Rhoads Hosts "A Ride to Remember"

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads will host the second annual motorcycle event, A Ride to Remember, Sunday, May 22, in Ames. He hopes to raise funds and awareness to support a cause that deeply affects him and his family: Alzheimer's disease.
“For ten years I have watched not only my mother battle Alzheimer's disease but my father who is still her 24-hour caregiver in their home, at the age of 83,” Rhoads said.
The 2011 Alzheimer's Association Facts & Figures report, recently released, states in 2010, nearly 15 million family members and friends provided 17 billion hours of unpaid care for people with Alzheimer's or other dementias. This care is valued at $202.6 billion. Although caregivers report positive feelings about care giving, including family togetherness, they also report high levels of stress. Many times the caregivers may begin having their own general health issues and become higher risk for chronic diseases as they sometimes neglect their own well-being in order to maintain the care to their loved one.
“I am excited to help the Alzheimer's Association with the second annual Alzheimer's Association - A Ride to Remember event. The benefits of this motorcycle ride will help fight a disease that afflicts countless Americans, including my mother Mary, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease over 10 years ago,” Rhoads said.
“My hope is we have hundreds of motorcycles out on the streets of Ames, helping me raise awareness for the millions affected by this disease.”
Join Rhoads, Ames Hy-Vee stores, 95 KGGO, ABC 5 and Zylstra Harley Davidson, on Sunday, May 22 at the south end of Jack Trice Stadium. Registration is $25 per person and includes an event t-shirt and BBQ dinner following the ride with Rhoads through Central Iowa. Day-of registration and a meet & greet with Coach Rhoads will begin at noon with the ride at approximately 1 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer's Association.
