AMES, Iowa - Micah Byars is the newest member of the Iowa State men's basketball coaching staff. Byars, a native of Gainesville, Fla., was named Director of Player Development in April after serving as the Director of Basketball Operations at UCF.
Byars has been in the basketball business for over a decade and worked at four other schools (Santa Fe Community College, New Orleans, Chipola Community College and UCF) prior to his arrival in Ames. Byars developed a relationship with Iowa State Associate Head Coach T.J. Otzelberger when both were assistants at Chipola from 2003-05.
Byars was an outstanding athlete at P.K. Yonge High School, a developmental research laboratory school located on the University of Florida campus. He excelled in multiple sports in high school before enrolling at Florida where he was a member of Steve Spurrier's powerhouse Gator football program.
Byars recently sat down with cyclones.com to talk about his decision to join the Iowa State men's basketball staff and his time playing football with the Gators.
