AMES, Iowa - Iowa State received two first-place votes and finished second in the Big 12 Preseason Poll, the league office announced Wednesday. The Texas Longhorns scored seven first-place votes to take the top spot in the preseason poll for the third time in four seasons.
The Cyclones tied with Oklahoma with 53 overall points in the poll, 10 points behind the Longhorns' 63. Texas A&M and Missouri rounded out the top half of the new nine-team conference rankings, followed by Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and Texas Tech.
The Cyclones finished third in the league in 2010 behind Nebraska and Texas, the only two conference teams to sweep the season series against Iowa State.
Making its fifth-straight trip to the NCAA tournament, Iowa State finished 2010 with a 20-9 record, going 13-7 in the Big 12, and ranked 25th by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Iowa State kicks off its 2011 slate on Aug. 26 when the Cyclones travel to DeKalb, Ill. for the Northern Illinois Invitational to face Cincinnati, Purdue and the hosting Huskies.
