AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team gets the 2011 season underway with its Cardinal and Gold scrimmage on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum at 3 p.m. CDT.
Fans at Saturday's event will get a sneak peak of the 18th-ranked Cyclones who were picked to finish second in the Big 12 this year in the league's preseason coaches' poll. Cyclones Jamie Straube and Alison Landwehr were named to the all-conference preseason team while Hannah Willms garnered preseason conference newcomer of the year recognition.
Three new faces will be on display at the scrimmage as freshmen Victoria Hurtt, Taylor Goetz and Tory Knuth, sister of junior Taylor Knuth, take the court. The trio was PrepVolleyball.com's No. 25 recruiting class in the nation for 2011 and Knuth earned the Des Moines Register's Player of the Year award.
Another highly anticipated moment of the past year, the return of outside hitter Rachel Hockaday, also takes place Saturday. Hockaday missed the 2010 season after suffering a knee injury in the first match of the season against Florida.
Prior to Saturday's event, the Cyclones will host a special youth clinic for kids in the eighth grade or under from 11-noon at the Forker Building on the Iowa State campus and season ticket holders will be treated to a chalk talk exclusive beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Hilton. Sign up for the youth clinic is available here.
