AMES, Iowa – The No. 18 Cyclones held their cardinal and gold scrimmage match on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. Players moved between the cardinal and gold teams throughout each set to help Gold take three-of-four sets over Cardinal (25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 26-24).
“Scrimmages are tough to judge because you usually do not look in sync,” head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “We block really well, we should be a good blocking team and that should be a strength of the team this season.”
The Cyclones posted a combined 28 total team blocks in the match. Taylor Knuth led the Cyclones with nine block assists while Deb Stadick added three solo blocks and five block assists.
New libero Kristen Hahn led the Cyclones defensively with 26 digs and freshman Taylor Goetz added 18. Junior setter Alison Landwehr added 41 assists to go with seven digs, two kills and two block assists.
Freshman Victoria Hurtt powered the Cyclones offensively with a combined 18 kills. Sophomore Hannah Johnson posted 13 kills and redshirt freshman Hannah Willms added 11.
“I thought Victoria played well attack-wise,” Johnson-Lynch noted. “She competed and that is what we are looking for.”
Both squads got off to a slow start in an evenly-matched first set, with both sides hitting under .100. The gold squad pulled away late in the proceedings and Hurtt finished off the set to give the gold team a 25-21 win.
The second set was dominated by the cardinal squad, who hit .516 for the set. The cardinal squad locked up the set on a block assist by Johnson and Taylor Knuth to win, 25-16.
Set three was much more even as both teams went to bonus volleyball to settle the set, with Johnson finishing off the set again with a kill for the gold squad to win, 26-24.
The fourth set was a back and forth set as two long runs by the cardinal team kept the squad alive. The gold side eventually pulled ahead and took the fourth set, 26-24.
“There are a lot of areas we still need to work on,” Johnson-Lynch concluded. “We still have questions in the lineup to figure out.”
