AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's basketball team conducted an intrasquad scrimmage this afternoon in preparation for its trip to Italy. It was the first scrimmage of the 2011-12 season for the Cyclones, as Iowa State departs for Italy on Tuesday for its first foreign trip since 2004.
The Cyclones continued to focus much of their time on defense, as the split squad increased their fullcourt and halfcourt pressure. Lack of depth prohibited Iowa State to play pressure defense a year ago, but that doesn't seem to be the case this season. More depth in the backcourt has given Iowa State head coach
Fred Hoiberg the freedom to press more and increase their on-ball pressure.
Scott Christopherson led all players in the scrimmage with 22 points, including a 4-of-7 effort from 3-point range. Christopherson was one of three players with four treys, as
Chris Allen and
Chris Babb equaled Christopherson with four triples each.
Royce White added 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting and
Melvin Ejim led all players with 11 boards. True freshman
Percy Gibson had 15 points and six boards, connecting on 7-of-8 shots from the floor.
As a team, the Cyclones drained 18 3-pointers.
The Cyclones will have one more practice tomorrow before departing for Italy.
