Willms, Straube, Landwehr Garner Preseason Nods

AMES, Iowa - Redshirt freshman Hannah Willms has been named the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced today. Juniors Jamie Straube and Alison Landwehr have been named to the Big 12 Preseason Team. This is the first preseason honor for all three players.
An outside hitter from Waterloo, Willms was PrepVolleyball.com's No. 37 recruit in the nation in 2009 and was named the Des Moines Register's Female High School Athlete of the Year as a senior at Dike-New Hartford High School. Willms earned a spot on the Des Moines Register's All-State Elite Team after recording 570 kills in 2009, an average of 5.18 kills per set.
An all-around player, Willms also averaged 2.70 digs and 0.56 blocks while leading the Wolverines to the 2009 state tournament. A track standout as well, Willms earned All-Big 12 and second team All-America honors as a member of the 2010-11 Cyclone track and field team.
One of five players unanimously chosen for the preseason team, Straube was a 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention and was named to the All-Big 12 first team. The middle blocker out of Tecumseh, Neb. led the Cyclones with a .326 hitting percentage as a sophomore and ranked in the top 10 in the conference in hitting percentage and blocks per set (1.05).
Taking over as the Cyclones' starting setter last season, Landwehr led the league with 11.89 assists per set, ranked seventh in the nation. Against Creighton in the NCAA Tournament, the St. Louis, Mo. native recorded 62 assists, the most by any Cyclone since former All-American Kaylee Manns collected 70 at Colorado in 2008. In the Cyclones' win over then-No. 14 Kentucky last season, Landwehr became the only setter in Iowa State history to record 10 kills.
Texas swept the other preseason individual awards as Rachael Adams and Khat Bell were selected as player and freshman of the year, respectively. Oklahoma led the league with three preseason team selections.
