AMES, Iowa - Once freshman Kaeli Flaska tallied her first career goal she could not stop scoring. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native scored three goals to lead the Iowa State soccer team to a 4-0 win over Loyola-Chicago Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex.
Senior Mary Kate McLaughlin scored Iowa State's first goal 27:10 into the match off a header from a corner kick. Sophomore Emily Goldstein served the corner kick into the six-yard area and McLaughlin capitalized to score her first goal of the season.
After McLaughlin's goal, it was all about Flaska who found the back of the net at the 33:56 mark. Flaska's first goal came off assists from McLaughlin and Amanda Cacciatore. Cacciatore's assist was the first of her career. Just under four minutes later, Flaska doubled her scoring for the day with a goal off another Cacciatore assist. After the Cyclones took their 3-0 lead into halftime, Flaska delivered her third goal of the day 14 minutes into the second half.
Flaska's hat trick was the first by a Cyclone since Kristina Baumann had a three-goal effort against Texas Tech on Oct. 27, 2002.
Cacciatore's two-point day was a career best, and McLaughlin had a career-high four-point match.
Freshman Andrea Swanson played the full 90 minutes in goal for Iowa State and recorded her first career shutout. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native registered three saves.
Iowa State (4-3-1) controlled Loyola-Chicago (3-3-1) statistically with a 23-8 shots edge. The Cyclones had five corner kicks to Loyola's one.
The Cyclones return to action Friday with a match at 6:30 p.m. against South Dakota State. The contest will be at the ISU Soccer Complex.
