TOLEDO, Ohio - The Iowa State soccer team held off a late rally by Toledo to defeat the defending Mid-American Conference co-champions 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Scott Park Soccer Complex. The win is the Cyclones' third consecutive and moves their season record to 6-3-1. Iowa State has only conceded one goal in its three-match winning streak.
Sophomore Brittany Morgan's third goal of the season 14:50 into the match gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead they would take into the intermission. Morgan's tally pushed her into a tie for the team lead in both goals (three) and points (six) this season.
"Brittany scored a great goal off a free kick that Hayley Womack created," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "She hit a great shot from just over 18 yards out that flew past their goalie."
The Cyclones' second goal came from sophomore Erin Green who found the back of the net at the 67:02 mark. Green's goal was the second of her Cyclone career and proved to be the gamewinner.
"Erin's goal was very important because we needed a goal at that point," Dillinger said. "The ball was bouncing around in the box and came to her and she had a great finish."
Toledo (2-5-1) made life difficult on the Cyclones when the Rockets' Rachel MacLeod scored with 6:03 remaining in the match. The Cyclone defense remained calm and did not allow Toledo to find a late equalizer.
Dillinger felt the game was not overly pretty, but she was happy with how her team battled.
"It was a tough game, and we showed a lot of heart today," Dillinger said. "We came out playing well, but the momentum shifted with about 15 minutes to go in the first half. The second half was very back-and-forth and almost like a ping-pong match. We showed our mental toughness to win the match, especially after Toledo really stepped up its offensive pressure in the final 12 minutes."
Iowa State freshman goalkeeper Andrea Swanson played all 90 minutes for the Cyclones and registered a career-high five saves. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native collected the win and her season mark improved to 3-1.
The Cyclones' next two matches will be in Texas and will be the start of Big 12 Conference play. Iowa State travels to Texas A&M Friday for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff before facing Texas in Austin on Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
