Gannon Runs to Drake Fall Classic Title

DES MOINES - The Iowa State cross country team opened the 2011 season close to home, running 13 student-athletes in the Drake Fall Classic against Drake and Northern Iowa at Ewing Park Friday evening. Redshirt freshman Maggie Gannon made an early statement for the Cyclone women as she earned the title in the 4,000-meter race, posting a time of 15:15.63.
Iowa State's women dominated the 4K race, with sophomore Beth Olson finishing second (15:17.69), redshirt freshman Maddy Becker placing fourth (15:21.99) and senior Kersten Thorgaard taking fifth (15:23.31) in addition to Gannon's first-place finish.Â
Following the women's race, the men took their turn at Ewing Park's 4,000-meter course. The Cyclone men were led by sophomore Nick Schulze who crossed the finish line in 12:56.30 to take eighth-place. Redshirt freshman Alex Dillenbeck and sophomore Stephen Saylor followed close behind finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.Â
The Cyclones return to competition Saturday, September 17 when they host the Iowa Intercollegiate at the ISU Cross Country Course.
