STATS | CHRISTY JOHNSON-LYNCH INTERVIEW | HIGHLIGHTS
AMES, Iowa - No. 19 Iowa State made quick work of Iowa (25-11, 25-16, 25-17) Saturday at Hilton Coliseum behind middle blocker Jamie Straube's 10 kills and five blocks (one solo, four assists), giving the Cyclones a 2-0 edge in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Straube was named MVP of the Iowa State Challenge after hitting .385 on the weekend with 14 blocks. The Cyclones went undefeated to win the tournament and improved to 6-0 overall on the season.
"This match is always circled on our schedule," Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "No matter what the records of the two teams are, you are still playing Iowa. We knew that we would have a great crowd and we did a good job keeping our composure and being steady."
Straube posted a .600 hitting percentage (10-1-15) against the visitors from Iowa City and Tenisha Matlock was close behind with nine kills in 14 attempts and a block assist.
"We feel like we have two very physical middle blockers and we feel they can become dominant players," Johnson-Lynch noted. "We tried to get the balls to the middles a little more and we probably need to it a little bit more."
Iowa State played strong throughout the match, hitting .333 in set one and .393 in set two. The Cyclone defense held the Hawkeyes to negative hitting percentages in the first two sets and .111 in the third set, leaving Iowa to finish the match on a .000 hitting percentage.
"Today we did not give up any scoring runs," Johnson-Lynch said. "We had one run in the second game where we struggled passing but otherwise we kept runs to usually two points per and that was good to see."
Joining Straube on the all-tournament team were Carly Jenson and Alison Landwehr. After picking up two double-double performances on Friday, Jenson posted eight kills against Iowa and finished the weekend with three matches in double-figure digs with 12 on Saturday. Cyclone setter Landwehr had a busy all-around match, posting 32 assists, nine digs, four kills and three block assists, closing the tournament with 11.30 assists per set and seven block assists.
Next, Iowa State hits the road for a Monday showdown with No. 9 Florida. The match is slated for 1 p.m. CDT with Mediacom Connections (channel 22 in Ames) airing the match in tape-delay at 7 p.m. CDT on Monday night.
