No. 22 Cyclones Get Rematch With No. 17 Kansas

AMES, Iowa – Trailing Kansas 0-2 in a match in Lawrence, Kan. last month, the Cyclones battled back to force a fifth set before finally falling to the Jayhawks, 2-3. On Wednesday night, the No. 22 Cyclones (11-7, 5-3 Big 12) will get another shot at No. 17 Kansas (19-3, 7-1 Big 12).
Both teams struggled on offense in the earlier meeting, with the Jayhawks taking a .201-.149 hitting edge. Four Jayhawks reached 10 kills but only beat the Cyclones 62-61 in kill totals. Iowa State committed 33 attack errors and 10 service errors in the contest.
Since the loss at Kansas, Iowa State is hitting .264 in its last six matches, led by sophomore Victoria Hurtt's .335 average and 3.62 kills per set. Hurtt is coming off a .500 hitting spree in the Cyclones' sweep of Oklahoma on Saturday, after posting a season-high 22 kills in a five-set loss at No. 8 Texas last Wednesday.
Libero Kristen Hahn has had 10 aces in the six-match stretch and freshman Jenelle Hudson has eight, helping Iowa State to 1.52 aces per set over the last three weeks.
Caroline Jarmoc remains the backbone of the Kansas squad, recording 3.18 kills per set, hitting .383 and blocking 1.27 balls per set, all against Big 12 opponents. Jarmoc was one of three Jayhawks with 14 kills in their win over the Cyclones in Kansas.
Wednesday's match will be the ninth match against a ranked opponent for the Cyclones this season. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m. CST.

• Iowa State plays its first back-to-back home matches this week, remaining at home after Saturday's win over Oklahoma, to host No. 21 Kansas on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
• The Cyclones hit .373 against the Sooners, the highest average since hitting .402 against Missouri last season.
• Iowa State had 29 more kills (55-26) and assists (53-24) than Oklahoma, the largest margin for the Cyclones over an opponent since Nov. 24, 2010 at Texas Tech, when both margins were 31.
• Saturday marked the third time this season the Cyclones have out-dug a conference opponent by more than 15 digs.
• The match was Iowa State's third-straight win over the Sooners.
• Oklahoma scored 20 points off Iowa State errors in the contest, compared with 12 points for Iowa State off Sooner errors.
• Both teams collected four blocks in the match, the first time Iowa State has tied in blocks with its foe this season.
• Victoria Hurtt hit a career-high .500 against the Sooners. Teammate Mackenzie Bigbee (.533), also hit above .500, the second time the freshman has hit .500 this season (.550 vs. Cincinnati).
• Rachel Hockaday and Alison Landwehr recorded double-doubles for the Cyclones in the win. Hockaday has 10 double-doubles on the season, Landwehr has three.
• Hockaday is one of three Big 12 players with at least 10 double-doubles this season.
• Hockaday's .346 average against Oklahoma marks the fifth time this season the senior has hit over .300.
• Hurtt led the Cyclones in kills in both matches last week. On the year, Hurtt has led the team in kills in six times.
• Hockaday led the Cyclones with 14 digs against the Sooners and the team improved to 3-0 this season when the Decatur, Ill. native leads the team in digs.
• In their careers, Hockaday and Jamie Straube have 888 and 884 kills, respectively, as the duo heads into its final two months of the season.
• Iowa State is back on top in the Big 12 with 14.43 kills per set this season.
• Hurtt is a crucial factor in the Cyclones' kills numbers as the only Cyclone ranked in the top-10 in the league with 3.57 kills per set this season and 4.17 points per set.
• Tenisha Matlock (.316), Hurtt (.308) and Straube (.292) all rank in the top-10 in hitting percentage and Iowa State is the only league school with three players in top-10 in average.
• Kristen Hahn's 5.57 digs per set in league play is still the Big 12 benchmark.
• Setter Alison Landwehr had 59 assists against the Sooners, the most in a conference match this season.
• Iowa State had 65 total assists against Texas on Oct. 17, tying for the most in a Big 12 match in 2012.
• The Cyclones remain the only team digging better than 17.00 balls per set, averaging 17.03 digs per set in Big 12 matches.

• Iowa State opponents have hit over .300 just 18 times in 241 matches under Johnson-Lynch.
• Iowa State went 14-3 in three set matches in 2011 and is 5-2 in 2012. Under Johnson-Lynch, Iowa State is 94-32 in three set matches.
• Behind Johnson-Lynch's leadership, the Cyclones win 87% (130-19) of their matches when earning the first set victory.
• Iowa State has collected 20 wins in five-consecutive seasons under head coach Johnson-Lynch. The Cyclones have had 11 20+ win seasons since 1982.
