AMES, Iowa – Iowa State had three attackers post double-figure kill totals, but fell to Nebraska 3-1 in the Cyclones' spring volleyball finale at Hilton Coliseum Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped Iowa State to 3-2 in the spring season, while Nebraska finished 4-0 in spring action.
“We have shown to be a much better team this spring,” head coach
Christy Johnson-Lynch remarked. “I felt we backed away from the challenge. I do not know if we would have won or not, but we had opportunities to get after it a little more. We got tentative and that led to some bad decisions.”
Jamie Straube led the Iowa State attack with 15 kills at a .323 hitting percentage. On the defensive side of the net, Straube contributed one solo block and two block assists.
Victoria Hurtt posted a solid 13 kills, but was offset by 12 attacking errors.
The 1,500 in attendance got one of the first looks at
Rachel Hockaday's return to an all-around player in the rotation. The senior had 13 kills and 12 digs, including four in the first set, to help pace the Cyclone effort.
“I think Rachel is in a really good position,” Johnson-Lynch noted. “That was a very big block she hit against and she was able to use it a lot. She got served a lot of balls and she held up really well. She faded offensively as the night wore on, but I feel she is close to 100 percent.”
After dropping the first set 25-16, Iowa State came back strong in a competitive second frame that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. The Cyclones were able to piece together a late 5-0 run after being down 14-13 in the set that allowed Iowa State to retain the lead and bring home the set win 25-22.
Victoria Hurtt and
Jamie Straube each posted four kills in the set, and
Rachel Hockaday chipped in with three.
The third set was one that could have gone either way as both sides battled through 17 ties and nine lead changes. The Cornhuskers looked to have sealed the set with a 5-0 run to pull ahead 22-18, but the Cyclones responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set back up at 23-23. Nebraska finally got over the hump with a Morgan Broekhuis kill and an attack error by Hockaday to take set three, 27-25. Hockaday and Straube each posted five kills in the set.
Nebraska's key to victory was its dominance on the blocks. The Cornhuskers posted eight total blocks in the fourth and final set that gave the Cyclones little chance of getting involved in the proceedings. Hannah Werth led the Nebraska cause with 17 kills at a .371 hitting clip and a team-high 11 digs. Gina Mancuso had an efficient 15 kills at a .429 clip to help assert the Nebraska offense. The Huskers dominated at the net, finishing the match with a 15.5-4.0 edge in total blocks.
“We played really well this spring, we beat a good Illinois and a good Missouri team,” Johnson-Lynch concluded. “I thought it was going to be really competitive. We know what we have to work on, and Nebraska exposed that. It will be good to know what we have to work on going into the fall.”
