AMES, Iowa – With just over two months to go until the 2012 season gets underway, the Cyclone volleyball team announced a challenging fall slate on Monday. During the 27-match regular season, the Cyclones will play 10 NCAA tournament teams from a year ago and play seven matches against teams ranked in the top-10 RPI in 2011.
Diving in headfirst, Iowa State will start the season at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. As they did in 2011, the Cyclones will play their first match of the season against Cincinnati whom Iowa State downed in four sets last season.
The following day, the Cyclones will take on a familiar foe in Florida State, the team that bounced the Cyclones from the NCAA tournament last season in a grind-it-out five set match in the Minneapolis, Minn. regional final. Following the match with the Seminoles, Iowa State will take host Tennessee in the weekend finale.
Far from easing up, the Cyclones schedule takes them to 2011 NCAA runner-up Illinois for two matches before the team returns home to play Northern Iowa, who defeated the Cyclones in straight sets in Cedar Falls last season.
The Cyclones will host the Iowa State Challenge Sept. 7-8, hosting teams from Eastern Washington, Syracuse and Iowa, whom the Cyclones will play in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series in the final match of the tournament.
Home matches against Nebraska and Baylor close out the six-match home stand, and kick off the conference schedule, before the Cyclones take to the road for a meeting with Kansas in Lawrence.
Returning home, the Cyclones will play their first-ever match against TCU, one of two teams joining the Big 12 Conference in 2012-13. Matches at Kansas State and Texas Tech follow before the second Big 12 newcomer, West Virginia, makes its way to Hilton Coliseum in early October.
Kansas comes to Ames on Oct. 24 and Iowa State finishes out the month with trips to TCU and final non-conference opponent, South Dakota State.
In November, the Cyclones will sandwich home matches with Texas Tech and Kansas State around a trip to Oklahoma. The regular season road schedule ends with back-to-back matches at Baylor and West Virginia.
In the final match of the 2012 regular season, Iowa State will host the Texas Longhorns on Senior Day, Nov. 24, before the NCAA Tournament field is announced on Nov. 29.
