AMES, Iowa - It's official, Iowa State's 37-31 double overtime football win over No. 2 Oklahoma State Nov. 18 at Jack Trice Stadium is a nominee for an ESPY Award in the Biggest Upset category. A Cyclone delegation of head coach Paul Rhoads, quarterback Jared Barnett, running back Jeff Woody, linebacker Jake Knott and cornerback Ter'Ran Benton will attend the nationally televised event on July 11 in Los Angeles, Calif.
"This is a great opportunity for our players," Rhoads said. "I've told our guys that hard work begets special things and this is one example."
Barnett, who put up 460 yards of total offense in the Cyclones' 37-31 triumph, said he can't wait to go to the City of Angels.
"It is the chance of a lifetime," Barnett said. "To win it would be amazing. It is exciting just to think of the people that will be there that night."
Woody, who gained all 25 yards en route to the winning touchdown in the second overtime, says the ESPYs were not even on his mind before the invitation.
"It is something that I thought would never happen," Woody said. "I am looking forward to it."
The Cyclones will attend a Pre-Party July 10 at the Belasco Theatre. The ESPY's Red Carpet Walk will be from 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Nokia Theatre on July 11. The show is from 8 p.m.-10:30 p.m. CDT on ESPN.
The ESPYS and related events benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research in memory of the late Jim Valvano.
