AMES, Iowa – What started three years ago as a way for Iowa State head football coach Paul Rhoads to honor his mother's memory by reaching out to thousands of people whose family life includes coping with Alzheimer's disease, has grown into a major event that has exceeded anyone's expectations.
Rhoads has teamed with the Alzheimer's Association of Iowa to host “A Ride to Remember” with fellow motorcycle riders from across the state. Just less than 100 riders participated in 2010. More than 300 riders had registered early for Sunday's ride, with the registration proceeds going to battle the disease that robs people of their ability to cherish past and present. Rhoads' mother Mary, passed away after a fight with Alzheimer's.
By the time the participants began their ride with Rhoads, more than 500 bikes and more than 700 people departed the south parking lot of Jack Trice Stadium. The Iowa chapter of the Alzheimer's helped coordinate the event.
“Almost everyone here has their own personal story about Alzheimer's Disease,” Rhoads told the riders before starting ride. It is great that all of you have taken the time to help us.”
Rhoads said he is gratified by the number of participants. There is no reason to think the growth and reach of the event won't continue.
“Just like our team, we don't put numbers to quantify our goals an event of this nature,” Rhoads said.
“But I never thought it would get that big. I want to thank all our sponsors.”
