AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's cross country team travels to Bethlehem, Pa. Saturday to compete in the Paul Short Run. The event is hosted by Lehigh University at the Goodman Cross Country Course.
The Paul Short Run will mark the first race of the year for most of the Cyclones, as the top runners were rested at the previous two meets this season.
Iowa State men's head cross country coach Martin Smith is excited to field his top squad this weekend.
“This weekend will be the first time that we will be competing most of our top guys,” Smith said. “This will be an excellent opportunity to evaluate where we are after our summer and early fall training and fitness process.”
The race will feature several ranked teams from both the Division I and Division II levels. Division I headliners include No. 11 Iona, No. 15 Indiana and No. 20 Georgetown. Notable talent from Division II includes No. 12 Mount Olive, No. 13 American International, No. 14 Lock Haven and No. 21 Shippensburg.
“The Paul Short Run presents an interesting challenge to our team for several reasons,” Smith said. “We will be running against collegiate teams we don't normally see and it is a true cross country course that Iowa State has not had the opportunity to race or compete on before. The size of the field and quality of competition will allow our team to work on and attempt to transfer what we've been working on in practice to a racing environment.”
The men will be competing in the College Gold Race, beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT.
