NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 28 Iowa State women's cross country team took over the top spot in the Midwest region after a fifth-place finish at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational Saturday. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the latest regional rankings this morning.
The Cyclones were previously third in the Midwest behind No. 19 Oklahoma State and No. 22 Minnesota. The USTFCCCA will announce the latest national rankings tomorrow.
Iowa State was impressive on the national stage this weekend, defeating 12 nationally ranked opponents, including No. 4 Washington, No. 7 New Mexico and No. 10 San Francisco. The Cyclones rallied over the second half of the race to finish fifth despite falling to 11th after the first mile.
Sophomore Crystal Nelson finished 10th, notching her second-consecutive top-10 finish on the season. For the complete release on the Cyclones' race, click here.
The Iowa State men's cross country team did not compete this weekend but moved up to fourth in this week's poll.
