Melvin Ejim Named Candidate For Senior CLASS Award

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Melvin Ejim has been selected as a candidate for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award in college basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Ejim, a Toronto, Ontario native, is an All-Big 12 performer on the court, an active community member and an All-District honoree in the classroom.
Ejim, a history major, carries a GPA above 3.0 and was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. He has been initiated into the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society.
The forward has served as the men's basketball representative for three years on Iowa State's Student-Athlete Advisory Council. He's volunteered for Soles4Souls shoe drive and served as Honorary Chair for the Special Olympics of Iowa in the summer of 2013. He's also participated in the NABC's Stay In To Win program.
On the court, Ejim led the Big 12 in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and double-doubles (15) as a junior to earn All-Big 12 Third-Team honors. He recorded double-doubles against every Big 12 team and became the 30th member of ISU's 1,000-point club. Ejim is one of just three players in school history with 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 100 steals.
Ejim is one of 30 student-athletes on the initial list, which will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the season.
