AMES, Iowa – After a week on the outside of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll, Iowa State is back in the rankings at No. 24 this week. The Cyclones' ranking sets up a top-25 showdown against Kansas on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
After being ranked No. 25 for their wins over South Dakota and Oklahoma, Iowa State was surprised to see itself fall out of the rankings in spite of gaining votes. After a sweep at West Virginia last Wednesday, Iowa State's patience paid off as Cal State Northridge's five-set loss to UC-Santa Barbara opened the door to the top 25 back up. The Cyclones also moved past Purdue to get to No. 24.
Of Iowa State's six losses this season, four have come to teams currently in the top 25 in No. 1 Texas, No. 6 Nebraska, No. 9 San Diego and No. 20 Illinois.
This sets up a Top-25 showdown this Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum when the Cyclones take on No. 22 Kansas. The Jayhawks and ISU played one of the best matches in the Big 12 this season back on Oct. 23 in Lawrence which saw Iowa State prevail in five sets. The win was what started Iowa State's current seven-match winning streak.
