Hrezi Garners All-America Status at NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Iowa State men's cross country runner Mohamed Hrezi finished 24th at the NCAA Championships this afternoon, notching the highest Cyclone men's individual finish since 1995 (21st, Dmitry Drozdov). Hrezi finished the 10-kilometer race in 30 minutes and 35 seconds despite freezing temperatures and sup-par running conditions.
Hrezi entered the race with the goal of becoming an All-American, an honor awarded to the top-40 individuals. The Naugatuck, Conn., native was in the hunt for the entirety of the race and found himself as high as 15th overall around the race's halfway point.
Iowa State director of cross country and track and field Martin Smith was very impressed with Hrezi's ability to carry out his race strategy, despite the unfavorable conditions.
"Mo did an excellent job in executing his race plan today," Smith said. "In these types of conditions it was important to establish a strong position early in the race."
The Cyclone senior was elated, knowing that he had accomplished his four-year goal.
"I'm just so excited. I was very nervous before the race, never having been on a stage like this. I came in with my personal goal of top-40 in mind, and nothing was going to stop me today."
Hrezi also becomes the 23rd Cyclone from the men's team to earn All-America accolades and the first since Guor Marial's 38th place finish in 2008.
"I am extremely happy for Mo, earning the title of All-American," Smith said. "That is an extremely difficult feat to accomplish, especially when it's your first time at the national meet."
Colorado took home the team title at the championships, while Oregon's Edward Cheserek captured the individual crown in 29:41.
