Poppens, Prins Latest In ISU Draft Success
04.17.2013 | Women's Basketball
AMES, Iowa – On Monday night, Chelsea Poppens and Anna Prins became the latest in a long line of Iowa State women's basketball players to hear their names called in the WNBA's Draft.
The trend started in 2000 when Stacy Frese heard her named called by the Utah Starzz. Since that time, 11 other Cyclones have seen their dreams become a reality, giving Iowa State the second most WNBA draft picks among Big 12 schools. That total doesn't include former Cyclone Brittany Wilkins, who went undrafted but earned a roster spot with the Sacramento Monarchs.
In league that frequently sees the most picks among all conferences and has won two of the last three national championships, including a draft-high eight selections this year, having the second-most picks among Big 12 foes is no small feat.
In total, the Big 12 has had 95 student-athletes selected in the WNBA draft. Since 2010, the league leads all conferences with 26 draft picks.
