AMES, Iowa – Iowa State men's hoops star Melvin Ejim is a total student-athlete and, he continues to affirm this fact on a daily basis.
Ejim added another academic honor to his already impressive resume by gaining induction to Iowa State's prestigious Cardinal Key club on Sunday.
The Cardinal Key was founded in 1926 to recognize outstanding leaders at Iowa State University. Only people with the following qualities are elected to the club: 1. Leadership in university activities has been exemplary. 2. Scholarship is of high standing. 3. Character is above reproach. 4. Service to the university community has been outstanding.
Applicants must be a junior or senior standing and have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Ejim was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society in October and was the Big 12's inaugural Men's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year winner in 2013. A two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Ejim was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team.
Ejim was a key contributor to Iowa State's successful season in 2012-13, earning All-Big 12 Third-Team honors and NABC Second-Team All-District 8 accolades. The forward led the Big 12 in both rebounding (9.3) and double-doubles (15), as the Cyclones compiled a 23-12 record and earned their second-straight NCAA Tournament berth.
