AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman punter
Colin Downing is among the nominees for the 2014 Ray Guy Award, which annually identifies the nation's top collegiate punter.
The candidates were nominated for the award by their school's sports information department and the list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on November 14.
Downing, a native of Whitefish Bay, Wis., has had fantastic start to his Iowa State career, averaging 42.8 yards per punt in his rookie season, which is on pace to rank in ISU's single-season top-10.
Downing has recorded eight 50-yarders, including a career-long of 64 yards vs. Baylor, and pinned an opponent six times inside the 20 yard line. Downing has helped the Cyclones rank 28th nationally in net punting, as ISU's opponents have returned only 14 punts for a meager 65 yards.
