@CycloneMBB Notebook
- Iowa State is in its fifth season under head coach Fred Hoiberg and the 108th season in school history. Hoiberg has led ISU to the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons and is seeking to become the first coach in school history to earn four berths in a row. Hoiberg is 90-47 overall.
- The Cyclones are ranked No. 14 in the AP preseason poll, the highest preseason ranking since 1996-97 (9).
- ISU is 87-20 in home season openers. The Cyclones have won 16 season openers in a row dating back to 1997. Iowa State has won 20 straight home games against nonconference opponents, the 16th-longest streak in the nation.
Iowa State earned an exhibition win last Friday against Viterbo. The 67-point win was ISU's second largest in an exhibition game (Fort Sill, 1991-92, 68 points).
- The Cyclones had six players in double figures against the V-Hawks. Naz Long (5-of-7 threes) and Sherron Dorsey-Walker (5-of-8 FG; 3-of-4 3FG) led ISU with 17 points. Daniel Edozie had the game's lone double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. ISU's starters played an average of 17.8 minutes in the game.
- ISU is 4-0 in season openers under Hoiberg. The Cyclones have averaged 85.3 points per game in their last four season openers, including 95 points last season vs. UNC-Wilmington.
- Iowa State will be without the services of Abdel Nader and Matt Thomas. Both players missed the exhibition game and will miss the first two games of the regular season due to a violation of team rules. Nader redshirted last season after transferring from Northern Illinois. Thomas played in all 36 games as a freshman, averaging 5.5 points.
- Iowa State was picked fifth in the Big 12 coaches preseason poll. ISU has finished above its projection in each of the last three seasons.
- Georges Niang was selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team after averaging 16.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists as a sophomore. Niang averaged 20 points and shot better than 46 percent from behind the arc in his last four games last season, which was cut short in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (broken bone in foot). Niang was recently named the No. 7 player nationally by ESPN.com.
- Iowa State welcomes seven newcomers to the roster, including UNLV transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones. Dejean-Jones was selected as the preseason newcomer of the year by the Big 12 coaches after leading UNLV with 13.6 ppg last season.
- The Cyclones return a Hoiberg era-high 57.8 percent of their scoring from last season. Monté Morris and Dustin Hogue also return after starting last season.
Iowa State Team Trends
- In the Fred Hoiberg era, the Cyclones have made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game 60 times.
- ISU is 75-10 when leading at the half under Hoiberg.
- Iowa State is 20-1 under Hoiberg when scoring 90+ points.
- Monté Morris averaged one turnover for every 36.1 minutes he played as a freshman. He had 17 turnovers in 17 career starts.
- Iowa State has won 20 regular season home games in a row against nonconference opponents.
Series Notes vs. Oakland
- This is the first meeting in the series. The Cyclones are 9-3 all-time against opponents from the Horizon League and 8-9 against opponents from the state of Michigan.
- Oakland is coached by Greg Kampe, who is in his 31st season with the school. Only Jim Boeheim (Syracuse, 39 years) and Mike Krzyzewski (Duke, 35 years) have been at their schools longer.
- Former Cyclone Percy Gibson plays for Oakland. Gibson, who is redshirting this season, averaged 4.0 points in 74 career games for the Cyclones.
Oakland guard Kahlil Felder was a high school teammate of Cyclone Sherron Dorsey-Walker at Pershing High School in Detroit. Monté Morris was an AAU teammate of Oakland freshman Jalen Hayes.
- Morris topped Felder for Michigan's Mr. Basketball honor in 2013...both players were named to the Detroit Free Press Dream Team.
