AMES, Iowa – Five members of the Iowa State volleyball team were named to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, the conference office announced Tuesday. Three Cyclones were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in Mackenzie Bigbee, Taylor Goetz and Morgan Kuhrt and Victoria Hurtt and Caitlin Nolan were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
Bigbee and Kuhrt each earned their second consecutive Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors. Bigbee, a junior and accounting major from Williamsburg, Iowa, ranks third on the Cyclones with 2.37 kills per set. Kuhrt, a redshirt sophomore and marketing major from Waverly, Iowa has been one of ISU's top players since Big 12 play began. Kuhrt ranks third on the squad in Big 12 competition with 2.54 kills per set, along with contributing 1.71 digs per set.
Goetz earned her first Academic All-Big 12 nod. A senior psychology major from Ankeny, Iowa, Goetz has gone from unsung walk-on to one of the Cyclones' top defensive contributors, ranking second on the Cyclones with 2.16 digs per set in 2014 while playing in 19 matches.
Hurtt earned her second-straight Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honor. A senior advertising major from Kansas City, Missouri, Hurtt has had a bounce-back year after a challenging 2013. Hurtt ranks second among the Cyclones with 2.65 kills per set while also ranking as one of ISU's best blockers at 0.57 blocks per set. Hurtt is 13 kills shy of becoming the ninth player in Iowa State history to record 1,000 career kills.
Nolan was named to an Academic All-Big 12 team for the second year in a row. A junior marketing major from Southlake, Texas, Nolan is one of the top defensive players in the country, leading the Big 12 and ranking fourth in the NCAA with 5.63 digs per set. A four-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Nolan is nearing a career milestone as she has 997 digs heading into Wednesday's match against Kansas. She will be looking to become the 14th player in ISU history with at least 1,000 career digs.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Iowa State returns to the court on Wednesday when the Cyclones travel to Lawrence to take on Kansas at 6:30 p.m.
