- Iowa State is in its fifth season under head coach Fred Hoiberg and the 108th season in school history. Hoiberg has led ISU to the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons and is seeking to become the first coach in school history to earn four berths in a row. Hoiberg is 90-47 overall.
- The Cyclones are ranked No. 14 in the AP preseason poll, the highest preseason ranking since 1996-97 (9).
- The Cyclones hosted Minnesota on Nov. 2 in a closed scrimmage at the Sukup Basketball Complex. It was the sixth time that ISU has used one of its exhibition dates to play a closed scrimmage: Creighton (2008, 2013), Bradley (2010), Nebraska (2011, 2012).
- Iowa State is 46-4 in exhibition games dating back to the 1983-84 season. The last Cyclone loss in an exhibition was in 2005-06 when they fell to EA Sports, 64-57. All-time exhibition results can be found on page five of this packet.
- The Cyclones and V-Hawks are both coached by alumni of their institution. Viterbo coach Wayne Wagner, who is in his 16th season with the program, is also an assistant athletics director. He is 213-264 as head coach.
- This is the first time ISU has played Viterbo. It also marks the Cyclones' first game against a school from Wisconsin since beating UW-Milwaukee in 2008 (79-61).
- Iowa State will be without the services of Abdel Nader and Matt Thomas. Both players will miss the exhibition game and first two games of the regular season due to a violation of team rules. Nader redshirted last season after transferring from Northern Illinois. Thomas played in all 36 games as a freshman, averaging 5.5 points.
- Iowa State was picked fifth in the Big 12 coaches preseason poll. ISU has finished above its projection in each of the last three seasons.
- Georges Niang was selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team after averaging 16.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists as a sophomore. Niang averaged 20 points and shot better than 46 percent from behind the arc in his last four games last season, which was cut short in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (broken bone in foot). Niang was recently named the No. 7 player nationally by ESPN.com.
- Iowa State welcomes seven newcomers to the roster, including UNLV transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones. Dejean-Jones was selected as the preseason newcomer of the year by the Big 12 coaches after leading UNLV with 13.6 ppg last season.
- The Cyclones return a Hoiberg era-high 57.8 percent of their scoring from last season. Monté Morris and Dustin Hogue also return after starting last season.
