AMES, Iowa – Awarding a walk-on a scholarship is a special moment for most head coaches. It's the time to reward a player for their efforts.
Sophomore linebacker Levi Peters is the latest Cyclone to reap the benefits of their hard work and perseverance, as Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads announced on Monday that Peters has been placed on scholarship beginning next semester.
“One of the first things that is apparent about Levi is his leadership qualities,” Rhoads said. “In an era where leadership is not as abundant, but ever as important, he sticks out in his ability to do the right thing, say the right thing and do it in a manner to elevate those around him. He's obviously proved himself valuable as a productive player on the field, very much so on special teams. We believe he will continue to grow as a linebacker and defensive player to help our football team.”
Rhoads broke the news to Peters at Monday's team meeting.
“He kind of surprised me with it,” Peters said. “The meeting was over and we were all walking out the door and then coach said, 'I almost forgot. Levi, you are not coming back playing for us without a scholarship.' I just kind of put my head down. Everybody was jumping on me. It was one of the greatest feelings in the world.”
A native of Gilmore City, Iowa, Peters has been a fan favorite in his short period with the Cyclones. His hits and big plays on special teams have inspired his teammates and the Cyclone fanbase.
Peters' 2014 season was unfortunately cut short by an Achilles tendon injury suffered in the Kansas State game. He is currently in rehab and is expected to make a full recovery.
