AMES, Iowa- Members of the Iowa State Football team recently joined forces with the Ames Police Department for the 22nd annual Shop with a Cop event.
The football team participates each year in the event, which pairs police officers up with area youth to shop for holiday gifts. Shop with a Cop is made possible by donations to the Ames Police Benevolent Association. Families are chosen through an application process, allowing police to make sure that needy kids have gifts to open on Christmas morning.
Area families met up with the APD at the Ames Target store, where 22 football players received the opportunity to serve as role models and help kids shop for the perfect gift.
Sophomore Levi Peters participated in the event for the first time and vowed to make it an annual ritual.
“It made me appreciate what I have,” Peters said. “What a feeling knowing you are making some these kids' day, year or holiday. To make someone feel like that, it's really special.”
