AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team will begin the spring volleyball season this Saturday by hosting a tournament in Hilton Coliseum. The tournament, which also features UNI, Omaha and Nebraska-Kearney, will begin at 10 a.m. with two courts of action going on simultaneously. Admission to the event is free.
The schedule of play is below:
10 a.m. – ISU vs. Omaha; Neb.-Kearney vs. UNI
11:15 a.m. – ISU vs. Neb.-Kearney; Omaha vs. UNI
1:30 p.m. – ISU vs. UNI; Omaha vs. Neb.-Kearney
Note: the first match listed will be played on the East court (Court 1) and the second match listed will be on the West court (Court 2).
Matches will be two sets to 25 points with a third set to 15 if needed.
Iowa State is coming off its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance in 2013. Head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch returns 10 student-athletes from last year's squad, led by AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Mackenzie Bigbee.
Fans will also get a chance to see some new faces this weekend. Maria Fruechte and Samara West will be in action after redshirting in 2013. The spring season will also feature newcomers Monique Harris and Suzanne Horner. Harris, a freshman setter/defensive specialist from Clinton, Iowa, graduated from high school early and has enrolled at Iowa State and has been practicing with the Cyclones. Horner, a rising-sophomore transfer setter from Mississippi State, enrolled at Iowa State during the mid-term and has been practicing with the Cyclones.
After this weekend's tournament, the Cyclones travel to Cedar Falls next weekend for a tournament hosted by UNI. On Thursday, Apr. 17, Iowa State will take on Creighton in a match at Carroll High School in Carroll, Iowa at 6:30 p.m. The spring season will wrap up on Saturday, Apr. 19 when the Cyclones host Nebraska at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Admission to the match between ISU and the Cornhuskers will be free.
