AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's cross country team will open the 2014 season as the No. 9-ranked team in the nation, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today. The 2014 poll marks the sixth-consecutive season that the Cyclones have opened the year ranked in the nation's top-30.
The ninth-place ranking is the second-highest preseason ranking in program history (2012 - 5th), marking just the third time the Cyclones have opened the year inside the nation's top-10. The Iowa State women are the top-ranked program in the Big 12, with Oklahoma State and West Virginia also making the top-20 at No. 19 and No. 20.
The Cyclones return five of last year's starting seven , including four scorers in Crystal Nelson, Bethanie Brown, Katy Moen and Perez Rotich. Nelson and Brown both ran to All-America honors last season, making Iowa State the lone women's program in the nation to return multiple All-Americans to its roster.
The top-ranked team in the Midwest region, the Cyclones also bring in a strong newcomer class, with talent from the transfer and high school level. Brown-transfer Margaret Connelly and redshirt-freshman Erin Hooker will look to be strong contributors on the varsity squad. Hooker sat out her initial collegiate season in 2013, while Connelly comes to Iowa State as a former Ivy-League standout with championship experience, having run for the Bears at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Michigan took the poll's top spot with six first-place votes, as Oregon, Florida State, Stanford and Georgetown rounded out the women's top five.
The Cyclones open competition Friday at the Bulldog 4K Classic in Des Moines, Iowa, and competition is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. CT.
