AMES, Iowa - The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2014 preseason national poll this afternoon, ranking the Iowa State men's program at No. 26 to open the year.
With the ranking, the Cyclone men open the year in the nation's top-30 for the first time since 2010. Iowa State is the third-ranked program in the Big 12, behind No. 4-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 23 ranked Texas, but ahead of No. 28 Oklahoma. With four teams ranked in the top-30, the Big 12 placed the third-most teams in the poll.
The Cyclones are ranked No. 3 in the Midwest and return four of their top seven from 2013 in Martin Coolidge, Brian Llamas, Tyler Jermann and Edward Kemboi, as Coolidge is the squad's top returner. Jason Thomas will also be contending for a varsity role coming off of a redshirt year.
The team lost All-American Mohamed Hrezi to graduation this season, but brings in one of the nation's top recruiting classes, a class that features three Footlocker High School All-Americans in Dan Curts, Josef Andrews and Toby Hardwick. Also in the class are highly-touted recruits Josh Evans, Nathan Rodriguez and Nolan McKenna.
The Cyclones also bring in talent from the transfer market, as Brian Biekert, a Central Connecticut State transfer, will also likely contend for a varsity spot.
The Cyclone men open the season Friday at the Bulldog 4K Classic in Des Moines, Iowa. Action is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. CT.
