MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Iowa State volleyball team got outstanding performances from its freshmen as the Cyclones defeated Tulsa in four sets 25-19, 29-31, 25-12, 25-12 Saturday afternoon at the Sports Pavilion. The win improved ISU to 5-2 while Tulsa falls to 5-3 on the season.

Turning Point of the Match
In the third set, the match was tied 1-1 and Iowa State and Tulsa looked as if there was going to be another battle throughout the third as ISU held an early 4-3 lead. The Cyclones took control of the match from there with a dominant 12-5 run that put them ahead in the set 16-8 and Tulsa out of the picture.
The run featured some of everything. There were some powerful shots from the likes of Mackenzie Bigbee and Samara West. There were some aces from Ciara Capezio, who had two in the match after coming into the match with just one in ISU's first six matches. There was also plenty of blocking as ISU recorded a season-high 15.0 total blocks, going over 10.0 total blocks for the third consecutive match.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…
Alexis Conaway and Samara West. It is tough to pick between ISU's freshmen middle blockers, as both did plenty of notable things to help guide Iowa State to victory.
Conaway, the freshman from Orange City, Iowa, showed her incredible potential with the most dominant blocking performance by a Cyclone in the past five years. Conaway set an Iowa State freshman record with 11 block assists, breaking the previous record that belonged to Jodi DeVries against Dayton in 1996. It was also the first time a Cyclone had more than 10 blocks in a match since Jen Malcom against San Diego in the 2007 NCAA First Round. The blocking was not enough for Conaway as she posted a career-high 12 kills at a .476 hitting percentage.
West, the redshirt freshman from Omaha, Neb. was a dominant force at the net throughout the match as well. West was a consistent contributor throughout the match with her career-high 11 kills at a .579 hitting percentage. West also had the best blocking match of her young ISU career with four block assists.
