FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - The No. 27-ranked Iowa State men's cross country team notched a fifth-place finish this afternoon at the 29th annual Roy Griak Invitational held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Cyclone senior Martin Coolidge led the team's scoring effort with a fifth-place individual finish. The Elyria, Ohio, native ran conservatively over the early half of the race, running around 25th overall. Coolidge took off over the final 3 kilometers, passing 18 competitors en route to a time of 24:55. Coolidge finished the 8-kilometer race just 9 seconds behind race-winner Nate Jewkes of Southern Utah.
Edward Kemboi was the next Cyclone across the line, finishing 26th with a time of 25:34. Kemboi passed several opponents over the final stretch as well, moving up nine places over the final kilometers of the race.
The Cyclone freshmen were impressive in their collegiate debuts, as Josef Andrews and Dan Curts finished 30th and 42nd for the Cyclones. Andrews and Curts finished the race in 25:40 and 25:47, respectively. Toby Hardwick was the sixth Cyclone across the line, clocking a time of 26:06.
Tyler Jermann rounded out the ISU scoring effort with a time of 26:03 to finish 59th. Jermann's second half was possibly the most impressive of the day, knocking off 36 racers over the final 3K.
The Cyclones finished with 162 points, placing all five scoring runners in the top-60. The five scorers finished with a spread of 1 minute, 8 seconds.
In team competition, Iowa State upset No. 24 Texas (6th) and No. 19 North Carolina (9th), employing a pack-style strategy.
Southern Utah swept the team and individual titles, led by Jewkes first-place finish. The Thunderbirds finished with 142 team points.
