AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's and women's cross country teams are set to return to action on Saturday in two separate locations, as the men travel to Lawrence, Kan. for the Rim Rock Classic, while the women head to the Greater Louisville Classic.
The Iowa State women, ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in USTFCCCA's Midwest Regional rankings, will get an opportunity to run at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, the course that will host the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship. Head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough will seize the opportunity to put the squad's best foot forward for the 5K race and, for the first time this season, debut some of the team's top runners that are expected to lead the way in the postseason.
Along with a number of the ISU's top battle-tested runners, freshman Becky Straw is expected to make her Cyclone debut. Straw, who hails from the United Kingdom, arrived at Iowa State following an outstanding prep career. She won the 2015 Midland Cross Country Championships, after taking eighth at the 2014 European Cross Country Championships.
It is also anticipated that 2013 All-American and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Bethanie Brown, as well as key returnees Perez Rotich and Erin Hooker, will be making season debuts. The women's race kicks off at 9:15 a.m. CT. For more information on the Greater Louisville Classic, including a complete schedule of events and lineup sheets, click here.
The Cyclone men will travel to Lawrence, Kan. for the Rim Rock Classic, as they hit the course for the first time since placing first at the Hawkeye Early Bird Invitational on Sept. 4. Iowa State is currently ranked No. 22 nationally and No. 2 in the Midwest Region.
Iowa State's coaching staff, led by head coach Martin Smith, used the time off to continue to develop their talented, young squad. In particular, the Cyclones have continued to make progress on building the team's chemistry and developing their pack running approach.
The Cyclones will be tested, as they face stiff competition, from Big 12 foe Kansas as well as Nebraska, Rice, New Mexico State and Cal State Fullerton. When the Cyclones run at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday, it will be a return to the site of their third-place finish at the 2014 Big 12 Championship where Dan Curts and Martin Coolidge earned All-Big 12 honors.
The men's race of the Rim Rock Classic will kick off from Rim Rock Farm at 9 a.m. CT. Timing and final results will be available from Branch Timing. For further coverage of Iowa State Cross Country, follow @CycloneTrackXC on Twitter and check back with Cyclones.com for updates and results.
