AMES, Iowa – Iowa State was dominant in all aspects on its way to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-16) sweep of West Virginia Wednesday evening at Hilton Coliseum. The win improved ISU to 12-6 overall on the year, and 5-2 in Big 12 play. WVU is now 5-15 overall and 0-7 against conference competition.
Jess Schaben led ISU with 12 kills at a career-best .632 hitting percentage, while Ciara Capezio added 10 kills at a season-best .588 hitting clip. Caitlin Nolan had 14 digs to lead Iowa State.
Cyclones Ease Way to First-Set Win
The Cyclones have been ravaged by slow starts throughout the 2015 season, but that would not be the case in the first set Wednesday night. ISU got the first four points of the match to force an early Mountaineer timeout. The break helped WVU stymie the tide, but the Iowa State attack kept flowing as a 3-0 run upped the Iowa State advantage to 11-4.
The Cyclone lead reached as many as nine points on multiple occasions, giving Christy Johnson-Lynch the chance to bring in some different faces, with Hannah Bailey and Abby Phillips among the Cyclones seeing playing time. ISU brought up set point at 24-16 on a Ciara Capezio ace. WVU put up a strong resistance by fighting off four set points, but ISU was finally able to convert on the fifth try with a Jess Schaben kill to make it 25-20 Cyclones.
All Iowa State to Make it 2-0
The second frame had the same start as the first one, as Iowa State jumped out to a 4-0 lead that forced an early West Virginia timeout. The Mountaineers tried to hang close for a little bit, but Iowa State went on to a 6-0 run that blew open the frame to 20-7. The Cyclones were strong in attack with a .409 hitting percentage for the second set, while using five blocks to help restrict WVU to a -.071 hitting mark for the set.
ISU got its first set point on a Morgan Montgomery service error, and close the set on the first try with Grace Lazard powering down a kill to make it 25-11 Iowa State.
ISU Cruises to Sweep
After two sets of Iowa State running away with the set before it started for WV.U, the Mountaineers responded with a strong start to the frame, having the set tied at 8-8. That was when ISU turned it on, with a strong serving run from Monique Harris putting ISU ahead 11-8.
That was all the gap Iowa State needed, as the Cyclones continued to ride the outstanding play of Capezio and Schaben en route to building up a lead of eight points at 23-15. The Cyclones would bring up set point at 24-16 on Grace Lazard's fifth kill of evening, and closed it out on the next point with a kill from Conaway at 25-16.
