AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State volleyball team fell in straight-sets to No. 3 Texas 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-17) Saturday evening at Gregory Gymnasium. The loss dropped ISU to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play. Texas improved to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in conference competition.
Morgan Kuhrt led the Iowa State offense with 11 kills, while Samara West chipped in six kills at a .625 hitting percentage. Caitlin Nolan recorded 12 digs from the back row.
Cyclones Battle Out of Early Hole, UT Bounces Back Late to Take First
Texas was in command at the net to start the match as the Cyclones struggled to get clean shots over the Longhorn block. Down 10-3, the Cyclones were able to battle back into the set via the strong play of Samara West in the middle, as she helped propel a 5-0 run that got Iowa State back within range of UT. Iowa State eventually got it tied for the first time since 0-0 at 12-12 when Alexis Conaway put away an errant Texas overpass.
After eight back-and-forth points, the Cyclones were able to grab their first lead at 17-16 when Morgan Kuhrt fired one off the block. The Cyclones then used a Branen Berta ace, West stuffing Molly McCage and a Texas attack error to get a 21-18 edge. The Longhorns took five of the next six points, with Conaway's errant shot giving Texas the lead back at 23-22. UT got to set point at 24-23, but ISU survived it with a Conaway kill. ISU had its back against the wall again at 25-24, but UT converted this time on a roll shot by Amy Neal out of the back row to claim the first set 26-24.
Texas Pulls Away Late to Take Set Two
After Texas grabbed the first three points of the set, Iowa State quickly rallied back into the frame, eventually taking an 8-7 lead on a Longhorn attacking error. Texas responded in quick time, firing off a 6-0 run by re-establishing itself at the net and getting ahead 13-8. Once again, the Cyclones were able to respond as a 4-0 run started and capped by West kills made it 13-12 Longhorns.
Iowa State was able to get the Texas advantage back down to one point on multiple occasions, but the Cyclones were never able to make the breakthrough to tie things up. UT was able to build its lead to eight points via a 6-0 run late on that made the score 22-14. Grace Lazard put one in the net to bring up set point, which was converted when Natalie Vondrak fired wide to give UT at 2-0 lead after the 25-15 set lead.
Dominant Longhorn Offense Finishes Sweep
While the Cyclones did not find themselves quickly into a big hole, Texas was able to build its way into a lead, as the Longhorns pulled ahead 9-5 early on. However, ISU was able to battle back early, as Morgan Kuhrt provided strong offense to help reduce the UT lead to one point at 11-10. The Cyclones tried to take advantage of the momentum by switching to a 6-2 offense to match the Texas size at the net.
However, the Longhorns had the strength and momentum to push ahead, as they built the lead up to seven points at 22-15. The ISU offense had a solid third set, hitting .296, but Texas overwhelmed ISU by hitting .542 for the frame. Texas brought up its first match point at 24-16, and on the second try was able to finish the match via a Chiaka Ogbogu kill at 25-17 to complete the sweep.
