STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 11 Iowa State women's cross country team finished second at the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, while claiming the meet's top two individual spots. Junior Perez Rotich became the second-consecutive Cyclone to take home the Big 12 individual crown, while Erin Hooker finished second to give ISU the top two spots on the podium.
Rotich, who earned All-Big 12 honors in 2013 and 2014, was sitting in third at the 3,000-meter mark before putting the entire field in her rearview to close out the race. The Eldoret, Kenya, native's time of 20:48 was more than two seconds ahead of the nearest non-Cyclone runner.
Trailing Rotich all the way was Hooker, a sophomore, who clocked a 20:49 to take second place. Hooker, who took ninth at her first Big 12 Cross Country Championship in 2014, stayed right behind Rotich as the pair moved up through the field. It marked the second-straight year that Iowa State claimed the top two finishers at the conference meet, after Crystal Nelson and Katy Moen dominated the 2014 meet.
Despite falling down the home stretch, freshman Abby Caldwell gutted out a 15th-place finish to give the Cyclones three All-Big 12 performers. Caldwell clocked a 21:26 to join Rotich and Hooker on the awards podium. Another freshman, Evelyne Guay, finished just behind Caldwell to take 16th with a time of 21:30
Andrea Toppin rounded out the Cyclones scoring effort, taking 18th with a time of 21:32. Toppin was followed by Maryn Lowry (24th – 21:43), Anne Frisbie (36th – 22:08), Katherine DeSimone (41st – 22:12) and Kelly Naumann (52nd – 22:37).
The Cyclones were without one of their top performers, freshman Becky Straw, on Saturday, in addition to All-Americans Crystal Nelson and Bethanie Brown, who have not competed this season.
