LAWRENCE, Kansas – The No. 16 Iowa State women's cross country team relied on a strong performance from the back half of its lineup en route to taking second place at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Midwest Regional Friday afternoon at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. The second-place effort secures ISU's spot at the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships next Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky. The Cyclones will be appearing in their seventh-straight NCAA Championships as a team.
ISU had a quartet of runners finish in the top-20, and earn All-Region honors. Leading the way was Big 12 champion Perez Rotich in 12th place in 20:37.2, followed closely by Big 12 runner-up Erin Hooker in 14th in 20:42.6. Senior Andrea Toppin finished 18th in 20:53.2, with redshirt freshman Abby Caldwell right with her in 19th in 20:54.1. Rotich is now a three-time All-Midwest Region honoree, with Hooker earning her second All-Region award. Toppin and Caldwell are each first-time honorees.
The Cyclone scoring quintet was closed out by Evelyne Guay in 35th in 21:15.3. In spite of not scoring, senior Kate DeSimone coming in 41st place in 21:25.1 and Maryn Lowry rounding out the Iowa State squad in 43rd in 21:26.5.
Rotich and Hooker went out with the leaders, and were part of a group of about a dozen runners for most of the race. The Cyclones were not among the leaders in the end, as other runners sprinted to the finish in the aim of earning an individual NCAA qualifier spot, but the ISU duo came home knowing the Cyclones spot was guaranteed at NCAAs.
ISU got big drops in time from Toppin and Caldwell in particular, with Caldwell finishing 32 seconds faster than she did at the Big 12 Championships just two weeks ago. Toppin had an even bigger drop, losing 39 seconds from her time just a fortnight ago.
The women's cross country squad also earned ISU its first points of 2015-16 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, as the Cyclone women's second-place effort bettered Iowa's 19th-place performance. Oklahoma State won the Midwest Regional crown with 51 points.
The Iowa State women will take part in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Kentucky next Saturday, Nov. 21.
