SOUIX FALLS, S.D. – The Steve Prohm era of Iowa State basketball began in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday with a 68-62 victory for No. 7 Iowa State over Colorado. Senior All-American Georges Niang led all scorers in the contest with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
How it happened…
The Cyclones trailed 25-22 with 2:42 to playing in the first half, before closing the stanza on an 8-0 flurry to take a 30-25 lead into the locker room. Monté Morris, who scored or assisted on every ISU basket during the run, paced Iowa State in the first half with 10 points, knocking down 4-of-8 from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Iowa State momentum continued after the intermission, as the Cyclones built a 42-29 lead. Senior Abdel Nader, who was held scoreless in the opening half, led the Iowa State burst, scoring six points in the first four minutes of the half. Colorado would respond to make three consecutive three-point shots, including two by George King, to claw their way back into the game, eventually cutting the ISU lead to 43-40 with 9:49 to play.
It was a back-and-forth affair from that point on. The Buffaloes got a basket with 1:38 remaining in the game to narrow the Iowa State lead to 62-57. On the ensuing possession, Georges Niang drove the hoop with the shot clock running down and threw a lob to his front cout mate Jameel McKay, who dunked it home to put an exclamation on the Iowa State victory.
Players of Note...
Niang played a balanced game throughout, scoring eight points in the opening half and nine in the second while hitting 50 percent of his shots.
Nazareth Mitrou-Long was the lone Cyclone to knock down a shot from beyond the arc in the game, with the Buffaloes heavily protecting the three-point line. Mitrou-Long scored 13 points while knocking down five of his nine field goal attempts.
Morris filled the stat sheet in a way Cyclone fans have become accustomed to seeing from the junior point guard, adding 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals against a stingy Colorado defense.
Abdel Nader was the fourth Cyclone in double figures, scoring 14 on 6-of-13 shooting, with all of his points coming the second half. Nader added two blocks on the defensive end.
McKay just missed out on a double-double in the win, scoring eight points and grabbing 10 boards.
Colorado was paced by George King's 14 points, as the CU sharpshooter knocked down 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
