NICEVILLE, Fla. – No. 4 Iowa State raced out to a 22-point halftime lead on its way to a 99-77 win against Virginia Tech in the semifinals of the Emerald Coast Classic. The Cyclones improve to 4-0 this season, while the Hokies fall to 3-2.
Six Cyclones scored in double figures for the second time in four games, led by Jameel McKay's 23-point performance. The Cyclones shot 57.8 percent in the game and connected on 13-of-21 threes. ISU has now made 27 3-pointers in the last two games.
How it Happened
Iowa State blistered the nets in the first half, shooting 69 percent from the field (20-29) and 63.6 percent behind the arc (7-11) to jump out to a 52-30 lead at the half. McKay was a dominant force in the opening half, scoring 15 of his 23 points. All seven Cyclones that played had five or more points in the first half. The Hokies cut ISU's lead to just five (27-22) with 7:13 left, but the Cyclones closed the half on a 25-8 run to break open the game.
Iowa State continued to push the pace in the second half, extending the lead over the ACC foe to 32 points with 12:24 left in the game. Virginia Tech would trim the Cyclone lead to 16 with 5:32 remaining, but it would never get closer than that as ISU remained undefeated.
Cyclones of Note
McKay was dominant, scored 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting. The senior, who is now averaging 16.0 points and 11.5 rebounds, grabbed eight boards and blocked three shots in the game as well. Abdel Nader recorded his first double-double as a Cyclone and the third of his collegiate career, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double figures for the Cyclones were Monté Morris (14), Georges Niang (14), Nazareth Mitrou-Long (12) and Hallice Cooke (11).
Niang also had seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks for the Cyclones, while Morris added seven assists and no turnovers.
The Cyclones finished with a tournament record nine blocked shots, with Niang matching McKay with three.
