AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head football coach
Matt Campbell announced today that offensive line coach
Tom Manning will also assume duties of offensive coordinator.
Manning, who was hired as Iowa State's offensive line coach on Dec. 1, has a long relationship with Campbell. The two were teammates at Mount Union for one season (2002) and Campbell served as Manning's offensive coordinator at the Division III power in his senior season in 2005.
The duo also worked together at Toledo, where Manning played a major role in building Toledo's potent offense from 2012-15.
“Tom was such a major reason we were successful at Toledo,” Campbell said. “He understands our offense. He's been a guy that has called plays and been an important piece of our offensive strategy.”
The Rockets tallied three nine-win seasons and qualified for a trio of bowl appearances in Manning's four seasons at UT.
“I knew early on that this was the direction Coach Campbell was looking for,” Manning said. “We are fired up about it and been planning for it. If you look at the tape of our teams at Toledo we have always been a team based on formations and players. We want to give our best players the opportunity to get the ball. We have had great success running the football and our plan is to continue that. Our philosophy is to do what our players are really good at.”
The 2015 Rocket offensive line had to replace five starters from the season before, but Manning still produced outstanding results. UT ranked in the top-30 in rushing offense and in the top-five in sacks allowed, as the Rockets won nine games and advanced to a bowl game. UT allowed just four sacks in the regular-season.
In 2014, three Rocket offensive linemen earned All-MAC honors: Greg Mancz, Josh Hendershot and
Jeff Myers. Mancz made first-team All-MAC and was named second-team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America. Mancz also became the first lineman in MAC history to win the Vern Smith Leadership Award, presented annually to the league's top player.
UT led the Mid-American in just about every major offensive category in 2014, including scoring offense (36.6), total offense (490.5) and rushing offense (256.4). The season culminated with a nine-touchdown outburst in a 63-44 victory over Arkansas in the GoDaddy Bowl, capping a 9-4 season.
